A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study on Art Therapists¡¯ Experience in Making Relationships in Individual Art Therapy for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to understand the experiences of art therapists in the art therapy of children with autism spectrum disorder. In-depth interviews were conducted with 10 art therapists with at least three years of experience and were analyzed in the hermeneutic phenomenological study method presented by Max van Manen. Five essential themes and 19 sub themes were derived and the conclusions of the study are as follows. The essential themes derived as such are; ¡®became feel fear due to the inability to make eye contact with the children and the unresponsiveness of the children¡¯, ¡®became to feel frustration due to uncontrollable situations and experienced stuffiness due to slow changes in relationship and work in the same pattern¡¯, ¡®positive changes were gradually brought about through unceasing efforts to communicate and through the mediation of artwork leading to interactions resulting in the beginning of making relationships¡¯, ¡®became to recognize important elements in making relationships with children with autism spectrum disorder¡¯, ¡®experienced making relationships and felt that not only the clients but also therapists themselves were changing.¡¯ Based on the conclusions of this study is considered to be capable of helping better understanding of children with autism spectrum disorder and providing actual help in the formation of relationships in art therapy.
